Covid-19: how our production plant never stopped
If we go back in time to March 2020, the memories of that time are linked to fear and uncertainty. An unknown virus, the coronavirus, was disrupting our lives and there were very few answers available to us. In less than three weeks, Italy stopped every activity. Schools, restaurants, gyms - all non-essential activities closed, there was no one on the streets and we had to stay all day in our homes for the first lockdown since the war.
But Dompé farmaceutici couldn’t stop. In our manufacturing plant in L'Aquila, it’s produced and shipped worldwide our biotech drug for the treatment of a rare disease. Patients, who were waiting to receive their dose, couldn’t wait. If they skip or delay a dose, all therapy is compromised. The scenario of stopping production was not an option. At the same time, however, it was essential to ensure the safety of our employees.
Their health, as well as that of patients, is the priority. Thanks to the dialogue with our workers and labor representatives, Dompé was able to react promptly to the Covid-19 emergency by immediately setting up a shared company protocol to regulate the measures for contrasting and containing the spread of the virus in the workplace. "We reorganized our work to make it safe and to ensure everything was necessary for distances and to avoid contagions. We managed the emergency. Unfortunately, we were already familiar with a similar situation when the earthquake happened, although it is clear that Covid's situation is much more impactful," explains Annaletizia Baccante, Chief Industrial Officer at Dompé farmaceutici.
L'Aquila hub occupies an area of 160 thousand square meters and houses the research laboratories, the production of synthetic and biotechnological drugs, the warehouse, utilities, administrative offices, and it is thanks to the reorganization of the activities and the commitment of all employees that production has never stopped.
